Smoothies

Smoothies are an easy treat to make in the warmer months that can serve as any meal or snack. Depending on what you put in them, they can be an extremely nutritious and nourishing food for both you and your child. Smoothies are fun for even the littlest family members to make and create. Why go out and buy them when you can create something delicious and more nutritious at home? (Be mindful when going out for smoothies as many contain artificial ingredients and can be loaded with sugar and preservatives.) Take advantage of the summer months to get some locally grown fruit and get creative. Be adventurous! For the liquid - I often use coconut milk, occasionally use rice milk, or just water if just a fruit smoothie. Add a few icecubes to get it nice and cold.
I will add sweetener sometimes, – such as agave nectar, maple syrup or honey. You do not need to do this, but it is delicious and the kids love it. I only use a bit. I will often add a nutritional boost such as hemp seeds, wheat germ, nut butters, yogurt or kefir. Many add flax oil, spirulina, or kelp. The possibilities are endless.
*Smoothies are a great use for over ripe fruit.
*Smoothies are great for people with dairy allergies.
*Smoothies are great for pregnancy as you can adjust flavors to suit your “mood” and load it up with nutrients.
* They are perfect for busy or tired moms in the morning- just throw everything in a blender and you have a great breakfast that can be portable.
*As soon as kids can drink from a straw they are great on the go. A child who cannot yet use a straw can eat like icecream.
*No mater how busy you are, at least put the blender in the sink with water as the fruit can be very hard to clean later!
Check out our Greens in a Glass post for some more smoothie ideas.
Please share any smoothies you like for your family, and don’t hesitate to drop a question about any ingredients you are unsure of. Have fun.
