Greens in a glass

I am constantly changing and upgrading the way that I eat. I love to read what works for other people, and become excited to try them at my home. Raw food diets are something I have always been interested in, but have never has the real desire to do it. I am sure this will change one day- but for now, I just try to get more raw foods when I can. Green smoothies are the thing that has always peaked my interest in listening to their healing effects and energizing power in the morning. I have been feeling tired a lot as of late and needed to change something. I believe we all need to listen to our bodies, and when mine is telling me it is not in top form, I need to figure out a way to change it.
Thinking that I needed a fancy blender for this, I have always shied away from them. A friend of mine told me she does them in a regular blender and that her son, who is 3, loves them. OK- now I knew I needed to try this. My oldest is an amazing eater- loves leafy greens! Kale, spinach, collards, – you name it! However, I have had an extremely different path with the youngest. I still hold true to my food beliefs and put the same food out for him I do for the rest of us- but you can’t make him eat. I will say my efforts have paid off and he probably eats better than a lot of kids, but in my house he remains difficult! This being said, a liquid green every morning would be the perfect thing to not only boost his immunity but to get those much needed leafy greens into his diet. Not to mention the berries are an antioxidant powerhouse.
I began making them for myself and found I did have more energy, was not as hungry in the morning and began to take off those last 10 lbs. of “baby weight”. My oldest loved them right away and added them to his already mindblowingly nuritious diet. The little guy- well the first day he threw the cup. And the second, and the third. The fourth he would sip it while I was holding him. The fifth while Daddy was. Now- the blender goes on and both kids line up and walk away with a delicious cup good health!
I cannot wait to do this all next winter to see if the amazing healing properties of greens will fend away the sickness that I could not seem to get on top of this year with one in preschool and one still in diapers. Now it seems to be keeping what is flying around our area at bay. A whole season will be a true test!
To ensure you are doing them just get the ingredients once a week. I buy a huge box of spinach, two bunches of kale, lemons, bunch of parsley, and several bags of frozen berries. This way every morning I just tear off gr
eens, add some fruit, a squeeze of lemon and blend!
The smoothies we have been doing lately are:
- Kale, 1/2 lemon, mixed frozen berries,water
- Spinach, strawberries, lemon,water
- Parsley, mango, strawberry, lemon,water
Next week we are going to try orange peppers at Jasper’s request

I love your practical approach to green smoothies. Though we make smoothies on many an afternoon in my house (and also use the juicer frequently), we rarely do that in the morning in part b/c I just can’t stand the thought of that grinding loud noise first thing in the morning!!! Does anyone have a quiet blender or juicer?? (-:

Hi Josie-
We are “morning people” so the noise is not until we have been up for a couple of hours and they drink them while I am getting everyone ready to go out the door! However- an afternoon green smoothie is just as wonderful!!! Keep you posted on any “quiet blenders” I may find!

Yup. Green smoothies start our day as well, but I use alot of berries so they are still purple. I actually have used frozen spinach, as well as fresh. I throw bananas in the freezer when they start to turn so there is always one handy for a smoothie. Put this next to their oatmeal and I call it “personality improvement breakfast”.

Yes, ours are often purple as well. When we use mango- we get the futuristic green!!! Thanks for writing!
